Shearing Day 2005

Shearing Day — 2005
Alpacas are sheared annually, typically in the last spring. Each animal produces between 3 and 6 pounds of
prime fleece per year. Fleece from the neck is generally very soft but is considered secondary because
the staple length is shorter than blanket fleece. Additionally, neck fleece is harder to shear without
"second cuts" because of the tight corners to be turned while shearing. Surprisingly, the professionals we use
take only about 5 minutes to shear each animal.
